Wine Storage – WineGuards’s Guide to Optimal Wine Storage

Creating the best possible conditions for wine is an art that involves more than temperature alone. At Vinteknikk, we believe that proper wine storage can be summarised in five fundamental principles. Although not all of them are equally easy to achieve, making a focused effort will noticeably improve the quality of your wine, particularly bottles intended for long-term ageing.

The reward is unforgettable wine experiences. Imagine opening a perfectly matured wine for a special occasion, perhaps a bottle from your child’s birth year served at their confirmation, wedding or even silver wedding anniversary. For long-term ageing projects such as a carefully selected vintage port from an exceptional year, correct storage conditions are essential.

Good wine storage does not have to be complicated, but it requires care, stability and patience. Here are our five most important principles.

1. A Calm and Stable Environment

Stability and peace are essential. Vibrations can interfere with the wine’s natural ageing process.

One of the worst places to store wine is on top of kitchen cabinets, where heat rises and cupboard doors are constantly being opened and closed. You should also avoid areas exposed to frequent movement or vibrations, such as locations close to railway lines or aboard a houseboat.

A quiet and stable environment gives the wine the best conditions for developing harmoniously over time.

2. The Correct Temperature

Most wines are best stored at approximately 12–16°C. At higher temperatures, wine matures more quickly, while lower temperatures slow down the ageing process.

Extreme temperatures below –10°C or above 35°C can damage wine when it is stored under these conditions for extended periods.

A wine cooler with multiple temperature zones is a good solution for those who want to serve white wine, sparkling wine or rosé directly from the cooler while storing red wine at a more suitable temperature.

3. Suitable Humidity

A relative humidity level of approximately 65–75% is ideal. This helps prevent natural corks from drying out, reducing the risk of air entering the bottle and damaging the wine.

Excessive humidity may damage the labels, although it does not normally affect the wine itself. Applying a light layer of hairspray to the label can help protect it from moisture.

The Nordic climate often provides suitable humidity levels. However, wine cooling systems are available with precise humidity control for those who want complete control over their storage conditions.

4. Cool, Dark and Stable Conditions

The ideal wine storage environment resembles the climate of a natural cave: cool, dark and stable.

A basement or separate room can be transformed into a dedicated wine cellar using wine racks and storage solutions from Vinteknikk. When a separate room is not available, a wine cooler is an excellent alternative. Wine coolers are available in many sizes, making it possible to create suitable storage conditions even in a small apartment.

Avoid exposing bottles to direct light. Keeping wine in its original cardboard or wooden cases provides additional protection against sunlight and ultraviolet radiation.

5. Good Ventilation and Correct Bottle Positioning

Oxygen entering the bottle through leaks or dried-out corks is one of wine’s greatest enemies. Wine sealed with natural cork should therefore normally be stored horizontally, allowing the wine to remain in contact with the cork and preventing it from drying out.

Bottles sealed with screw caps can be stored in any position.

Some wine enthusiasts prefer storing bottles at a slight angle so that both the wine and the air pocket inside the bottle remain in contact with the cork. This may allow a minimal exchange with the surroundings without causing the wine to leak.

At Vinteknikk, our goal is to help you create optimal wine storage conditions, whether you are looking for a complete wine cellar, elegant wine racks or a wine cooler tailored to your needs.

We provide professional advice and customised solutions that give your wine the care it deserves, allowing you to enjoy unforgettable wine experiences both today and for many years to come.
